Smart Chair

Introduction

People spend a lot of time sitting in a chair in the office, at home, and in a car. Current, existing chairs are passive objects that need to be adjusted by the user instead of automatically adapting to the user's needs. The goals of the smart and intelligent chair project are to develop a smart and intelligent chair by making it aware of the user's activities (posture, movement, and "sitting habits") and to augment it with feedback mechanisms that assist the user in a friendly manner. Everybody deserves a good chair. The smart and intelligent chair project will address issues such as posture recognition, objective assessment of user comfort, and design of tactile stimulation patterns. We want to make the chair comfortable and visually stunning as well.

The potential for smart and intelligent chair technology is boundless. Possible interactions with other technologies, such as ubiquitous computing, real-time embedded technologies may provide new levels of convenience and utility that may redefine what we consider as necessary aids.

Purpose and Features

To design a system which is embedded in a chair in the ubiquitous computing environment and has features for the intelligent environment.

  1. Temperature Control
  2. Automatic detection of the map of the room and the location of different items in the room
  3. Finding and moving to a desired point in the room
  4. Auto-conversion into a bed
  5. Auto-adjustment of different chairs in the room
  6. Auto-cleaning of itself once out of use
  7. Auto-adjustment of the height of the back of the seat according to the user
  8. Changing the density of the coir in the chair
  9. Service Access, such as internet access through chairor TV's control operations
